Modal Scale Practice

9/20/2012

Modal practice allows us to really get into the sound of the scale and is a great tool for improving our improvisation skills.
When you practice the scales modally, you use an unchanging, fixed root note to play along with.  This root note is the 1 of the scale.

Practicing modally is a great way to develop your understanding of the scale and your ability to recognise, imagine and use the different notes of the scale.

Here are the five patterns of the minor pentatonic scale.  Line up the black notes with your chosen root, and explore the sound and emotion of each different tone.

A great exercise is to try and construct melodies that centre around each of the different scale tones.
