Biography

I have been playing guitar and electric bass for about 15-20 years, and playing in bands professionally for about the last ten years.

In the past I have played with Omer Makessa (a fine musician from Martinique) in Kayalie and Mankala; I played with and composed music for Ashowka, signed to Invada Records (Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) and Fat Paul's Bristol label) and many other groups of varied styles.  I currently play in Zun Zun Egui, a band with a very new sound that I can't really describe in a few words, signed to Blank Tapes and releasing an EP any time now.  I also play in a local jazz group called Safe Sax.

I have a particular interest in African music and its rhythmic sophistication, and I enjoy learning traditional rhythms and percussion and applying this to my bass playing across genres.  I also enjoy teaching the rhythmic as well as the melodic aspects of bass and guitar playing.

I am classically trained and played piano in my childhood to quite a high standard, so I understand and can teach Western music theory.  But on bass and guitar I am completely self taught and very comfortable with less formal methods of notating and communicating so I am flexible in my approach to teaching.  In other words, if you want to learn to read music, I can teach you, but it's not compulsory!

My musical career highlights include supporting David Byrne and Brian Eno at the Royal Festival Hall, supporting 10cc at the Colston Hall, supporting Marc Ribot in Coventry, Antibalas at the Barbican, playing main stage at Green Man, and all the many diverse musicians I've had the pleasure to meet and play with over the last few years.
