I have been playing guitar and electric bass for about 15-20 years, and playing in bands professionally for roughly ten years.
I played bass and wrote music Zun Zun Egui, a band with a very new sound that I can't really describe in a few words, signed to Bella Union with two EPs currently in the shops, and produced a full length album coming out in October 2011. I have recently left the band but continue to pursue my musical interests. In the past I've played in many different bands of varied styles – rock, hard rock, blues, jazz, african, latin, 'experimental', indie, reggae. My teaching approach is based on my experience as a player and composer of music, and I aim to pass on the tools, confidence and knowledge to begin playing with others.
I am classically trained and played piano in my childhood to quite a high standard, so I understand and can teach Western music theory. But on bass and guitar I am completely self taught and very comfortable with less formal methods of notating and communicating so I am flexible in my approach to teaching. In other words, if you want to learn to read music, I can teach you, but it's not compulsory!
My musical career highlights include supporting David Byrne and Brian Eno at the Royal Festival Hall, supporting Marc Ribot in Coventry, and Tinariwen at the Academy in Bristol, and all the many diverse musicians I've had the pleasure to meet and play with over the last few years.
